The growth rate of electricity consumption is rising, and the electricity consumption of emerging industries is maintaining a strong growth momentum

In 2023, the total electricity consumption in society reached 9.22 trillion kilowatt hours, an increase of 576.4 billion kilowatt hours compared to 2022, a year-on-year increase of 6.7%, and a growth rate of 3.1 percentage points compared to the previous year. The per capita electricity consumption reached 6539 kilowatt hours, setting a new historical high. Looking at different industries, in 2023, the electricity consumption of the primary industry was 127.8 billion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 11.5%, continuing the growth trend; The electricity consumption of the secondary industry reached 6.07 trillion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 6.5%, showing a clear upward trend; The electricity consumption of the tertiary industry was 1.67 trillion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 12.2%, an increase of 7.7 percentage points compared to last year, and a return to rapid growth momentum.
The electricity consumption of emerging industries is growing rapidly. In 2023, the electricity consumption of high-tech and equipment manufacturing industry increased by 11.3% year-on-year, exceeding the overall growth level of the manufacturing industry by 3.9 percentage points, showing impressive performance. Among them, the electricity consumption in the manufacturing of photovoltaic equipment increased by 76.8% year-on-year, the electricity consumption in the manufacturing of new energy vehicles increased by 38.8% year-on-year, and the electricity consumption in the charging and swapping service industry increased by 78.1% year-on-year, demonstrating a strong growth trend.
The electrification level of terminal energy consumption is constantly improving. The substitution of electricity in key industries such as industry, transportation, and construction continues to advance, and the proportion of electricity consumption continues to increase. The electrification rate of the industrial sector has reached 27.6%, and the electricity consumption of strategic emerging industries is growing rapidly; The electrification rate of the construction department has reached 48.1%, and the application scenarios of heat pumps, electric refrigeration, and heating are constantly deepening; The electrification rate of the transportation sector has reached 4.3%, and the penetration rate of new energy vehicles has exceeded 35%. A total of 8.596 million charging infrastructure units have been built, an increase of 65% year-on-year. The world's largest and most extensive charging infrastructure system has been built. Currently, the proportion of electricity consumption in China's terminal energy consumption has increased to about 28%, ranking among the top internationally.

As of the end of 2023, the total installed capacity of power generation in China was 2.92 billion kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 13.9%; The per capita installed power generation capacity has historically exceeded 1 kW/person since the end of 2014, and in 2023, it has historically exceeded 2 kW/person, reaching 2.1 kW/person. The installed capacity of non fossil energy power generation is 1.57 billion kilowatts, accounting for over 50% of the total installed capacity for the first time, reaching 53.9%, an increase of 4.4 percentage points year-on-year.
New energy sources such as wind power and photovoltaics have always maintained a leading global position. The construction of large-scale wind and photovoltaic bases, with a focus on deserts, Gobi, and desert areas, is accelerating. The first batch has been completed and connected to the grid with a capacity of over 45 million kilowatts, while the second and third batches have been approved with a capacity of over 50 million kilowatts. Construction is gradually underway. In 2023, the newly installed capacity of grid connected wind power in China was 75.66 million kilowatts, an increase of 37.05 million kilowatts year-on-year; The newly added installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation is 216 million kilowatts, an increase of 128 million kilowatts year-on-year. The proportion of newly added installed capacity of wind and photovoltaic power generation to the total newly added installed capacity reached 78.8%, becoming the absolute mainstay of newly added installed capacity. In recent years, with an average annual growth rate of 26% in new energy installed capacity, the utilization rate has remained above 95% for five consecutive years. The total installed capacity of grid connected wind and photovoltaic power generation in China has exceeded 1 billion kilowatts, reaching 1.05 billion kilowatts by the end of 2023, accounting for 36% of the total installed capacity. China's wind power installation has ranked first in the world for 14 consecutive years, and photovoltaic power generation installation has ranked first in the world for 9 consecutive years.
Non fossil energy power generation investment accounts for 90% of power generation investment. In 2023, major power companies completed an investment of approximately 1.5 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 20.2%. In terms of classification, the investment in power sources is 967.5 billion yuan, and the investment in power grids is 527.5 billion yuan. Among them, investment in non fossil energy power generation increased by 31.5% year-on-year, accounting for 89.2% of power investment.
Significant achievements have been made in energy conservation and emission reduction. The clean and efficient transformation of coal-fired power is accelerating, and the scale of "three reforms and linkage" continues to increase. The standard coal consumption for power supply in thermal power plants with a capacity of 6000 kilowatts or more nationwide is 302 grams per kilowatt hour; The national power grid line loss rate is 4.54%, a decrease of 0.28 percentage points from the previous year. More than 80% of coal-fired power units in the country have implemented energy-saving renovations, more than 90% of coal-fired power units have achieved ultra-low emissions, nearly 300 million kilowatt coal-fired power units have completed flexibility renovations, and more than 50% of coal-fired power units have deep regulation capabilities.
